    Paragraph 9
Where am I located? What is this building like? What is this buildings purpose? I am located filled with people all of the time, just like a Japanese festival celebration filled with people. “The student’s home on campus” is a place for students to eat and entertain themselves whenever they are free and wish to spend time with their friends, like an indoor picnic. This place has two cafeterias on the second floor, but not in the same location like the basketball courts at high schools. This place is as lively as a Japanese Arcade shopping district and as delightful as your favorite mix of cultural restaurants. The building also provides both student services and a quiet study lounge for students who would like to study in a quiet atmosphere, like a library but with more services available. This place does not cause problems for students, but help them solve their problems. The lower floor of the building is filled with many intriguing forms entertainment that students can use to past time or just have fun. Although the building does provide entertainment and food to its students, it can never compare to what a true mall has to offer.

    Paragraph 8

For my mid-term grade I hope to make an A or at least a B. In order to make the grades that I have targeted, I intend to study for my midterm and do proper research for the assignment given. I will also work on my writing weakness and strengths to increase my writing capabilities for the midterm. I would study the current writing techniques that we have learned in class and incorporate them into my writing style. I would also use the MLA writing format to focus and strengthen both my strengths and weaknesses in writing. By being able to obtain my minimum targeted grade I would be able to acknowledge that I have improved my writing skills and try to improve them further so that I may succeed in all my class essays. for the whole entire semester I have worked hard to improve my writng skills using what I was taught and some that I had to study for in class assignments. So far into the semester I have learned about similies, metaphors, Toulmin Logic and many other types of writing that can enhance my writing skills and improve the message that I am trying to convey to my audience when I write. I wish that I can write as elegantly as a swan flying in a nice breeze, but I know that I cannot do so yet, not until I have mastered the many types of writing skills in the world.

    Paragraph #5

During 1954-1975 Vietnam was a place of social unrest and political struggle between various Vietnamese factions vying for political power. It is within this tumultuous time frame that my parents grew up in. Family values have always played an important role in Vietnamese rural communities and they still do even now as Vietnam begins to westernize. During this time frame kinship played an important role in society and Vietnamese families. This strong cultural value of family and clan unity was brought upon because 74% of the country population lived in rural areas and had supported each other for generations. All ceremonies and family events occurred only within the family clan and rarely with outside clans unless there was a relative within that clan. Within Vietnamese families during this time period strict discipline and respect was always enforced and was the first lesson taught to children when they became of age. Within the clans the parents worked hard to provide for their children so that the children can concentrate on studying and field work when they have time to help out. Vietnamese children start their education at the age of three or four, around the time that they learn to speak and talk. The holidays that were celebrated all over Vietnam during this time period were: New Year’s, Chinese New Year, Buddha’s Birthday, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
An everlasting tradition of the Vietnamese people is the traditional dress the “Ao Dai” which has been implemented into almost every Vietnamese custom and holiday. The traditional dress applies to both men and women and was the proper clothing for special ceremonies as well as events. There were many types of Ao Dai, ones created for school, work, holidays, high ranking officials, and family customs. The Ao Dai is mainly worn by women and only on special occasions for me like holidays, weddings, funerals, and festivals. Because of its past the Ao Dai is considered a national symbol in Vietnam and a popular piece of clothing to wear for many female working and high school classes in Vietnam. The dresses main function in the past like the Japanese Kimono is to be worn for special occasions in the lower class and commonly by the upper class. It could be said that all Asian traditional wear is made for special occasions and to bring out the true beauty within a person. The traditional dress is worn by all classes’ peasants and government officials alike.
One of the most important and influential characters during my parents era was Emperor Bao Dai. He became emperor in 1925 following the death of his father Emperor Khai Dinh. The Emperor Bao Dai original name was Nguyen Vinh Thuy or Nguyen Phuc Thien since Vinh Thuy was closer to a feminine name. During his rule Emperor Bao Dai was considered more of a puppet and figure head ruler for French Indochina when France had control of Vietnam supporting French interests instead of his people. The emperor like many emperors in the past Emperor Bao Dai had many wives and children, two of his wives were Vietnamese, two were French, and one was Chinese. In 1945 the emperor abdicated his throne due to pressure from the Communist Viet Minh lead by Ho Chi Minh which allowed the Communist Viet Minh to take hold of North Vietnam and begin the communist rule of Vietnam. When Emperor Bao Dai was removed from the throne he was appointed Supreme Advisor to the new South Vietnam government, which later declared independence from North Vietnam on September 2. After one year in the advisory role Bao Dai left Vietnam and went to live in Hong Kong, China, while his country was going into a state of turmoil. During and After the French Indochina war, Emperor Bao Dai was invited back into South Vietnam not as emperor but the Head of State. Shortly after receiving his title he appointed Ngo Dinh Diem as his prime minister while he returned to his home in Paris, France. After 5 years of life in France Bao Dai was removed from his position as Head of State through a referendum by Ngo Dinh Diem with the aid of the U.S., this event successfully allowed Ngo to take control of South Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, representatives from North Vietnam came to visit and convince Bao Dai to support the Communist parties’ cause, as a result of his confrontations with the North Vietnamese representatives The former emperor spoke out against the American troops and South Vietnamese government for their actions. In 1982 former Emperor Bao Dai came to America to visit Vietnamese American communities and ask for reconciliation for what he has done. The Former Emperor Bao Dai died in a hospital in Paris in 1997 after a long life of painful experiences.
The Vietnam War is considered to be one of the bloodiest and deadliest wars of my parent’s time. My father joined the Southern Vietnam Army in the year of 1969 as a helicopter pilot, he flew many missions in and out of enemy territory to drop and retrieve wounded and allied soldiers from the battle field often taking fire from enemy troops. My father told me that during the Vietnam War family members would fight and kill each other just because of their different beliefs and where they lived. The Vietnam War began with the political unrest between South Vietnam, supported by the U.S. and Communist North Vietnam, supported by China and Russia. In 1957 conflict between North and South Vietnam began, with the North vying for the unification of the land under its control and the South fighting for its governing status of the land. While the South fought to oppose the spread of communism, the North fought to repel a foreign aggressor on their homeland. The main reason that my family believes to be the cause of the war was not the North wishing to unite Vietnam under communist rule, but it was the blocked Geneva scheduled elections for unification by the corrupted South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem that began the conflict which escalated into a full scale war. The Vietnam War could be considered a symbol of political corruption and what it can do to a nation. The war officially ended in 1975 with the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973 after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.

    paragraph 4 revised
Toulmin Logic is defined as “a method that accurately describes the way people make convincing arguments”. Toulmin Logic begins with a claim and moves onto the data and reason of why a person supports that claim that they made. I believe that Toulmin Logic can be described as the thought process before and during the composition of an argument, because it is a method that emphasizes critical thinking and understanding in a written composition. An example of Toulmin Logic within my paragraph one would be my claims and hopes of making a grade of an A or B within my Rhetoric class, then to the reasons and pathways of which I will accomplish my claim. In Toulmin Logic a writer must also determine if their reason are connected to the claim, or the warrant that links the claim and reasons together. The connections that links my claim and reasons for my claim is the academic writing format that I will study to improve my writing, Because the course is for students to learn and improve their original writing formats , by studying and applying the writing format as my own, I will have proven my claim and make it true. The connection between a writer’s claim and reason is called a warrant because it is a step in the Toulmin Logic that allows a writer to see if their reasons support their claims and prove the arguments clarity to its audience.

    Essay 1 rough Draft
    Influences of Life

Within today’s world there are as many people as there are dreams within a night and books within a library. People are born into our world with the ability to learn and develop the characteristics that will define them as individuals of society and change the world that we live in today. As I grew up in Vietnam and the U.S. my character was shaped by both my surroundings and my parent’s traditional values. My surroundings taught me the knowledge of the world that I live in and my parents taught me the ethnical values that supported my surroundings in developing me into the person that I am today.
One of my greatest goals in life is to be myself in everything that I do. Kindness and respect to others is probably one of the many ethnical values that are taught to children when they are young. When I was young I was taught to respect everyone around me especially my elders by both my parent’s and teacher’s. Growing up in Vietnam respect is an ethnical value that is strictly enforced by the Vietnamese community and families. To me kindness is second to respect, because it is what allows a person to be open to others. Because of my beliefs I am kind and respectful to everyone unless they make me believe otherwise. One of the most recent and virtuous characteristics that I have learned from my sword master sensei is to give others the benefit of the doubt before I judge them, for I had a habit of judging others when I had just met them instead of understanding who they are inside. By giving others the benefit of the doubt, I am able to accept them for who they are instead of whom they appear to be, and really get to know them instead of just being acquaintances that meet once in a while. In doing so I am able to make more friends and learn knew things in the world of college education. Because of the many people who I have met in my life, I have learned to be supportive and fair to those around me, who I care for. To be fair and supportive, I am always willing to help a friend in need and listen to them if they wish to say something no matter what is, because to me when a person is willing to talk to me about something that might be important to them and their life it is honorable to listen to what they have to say and provide support to them if I can.
Depending on where, when, and who a child is surrounded by in their living environment, can effect how they mature in the future. Ever since I was young I have always been blessed with great friends, supportive teachers, and an interesting family. Through tough and happy days my friends have always been there for me when I needed them, whether it was just one or all of them I was always happy to know that I had such great friends. It is because of my friends kindness and support to me that I was able to learn what they had shown me and return it them when they need me. I believe that it is because of the friends that I have made while growing up that I am part of who I am today. To me true friendship is a rare treasure all in itself. An educational institution is where we all learn the knowledge of the world that we live in, and practice it out with our friends. For me school was a place of wonder because I did not know what I would have to learn the next day. Throughout the years that I have gone to public schools I have had great teachers who worked to the best of their abilities to teach me the subjects that I needed to know so that I may understand the world around me. It is because of these wise individuals that also make up part of who I am today, a college student willing to learn more about himself and the world around him. To everyone who has ever had a family and neighbors, they know that their family is there to support them and their neighbors are there to provide competition and sometimes support. Up until now, my family has always been there to support me whenever they could and our neighbors have always been friendly to me and allowed me to become friends with them. Because I live in a Garland Vietnamese community area our neighbors would always help us when we needed help and sometimes celebrate things together; it is because of these celebrations that I was able learn many things and the many types of positive characteristics that I can express to others. My community has helped me become the person that I am today by allowing me to make mistakes and learn from them.
In Vietnamese families there are many types of traditional values that are upheld some of them are, the humble greetings, and the general etiquette shown to others, but the most important traditional value of all is respect. For example, to avoid disrespect when they disagree with a topic in a conversation Vietnamese people would usually stay quiet and not talk about the topic. Within my family respect is always first when I had to say something or do something for them. In Vietnamese traditional culture, wealth is not a sign of status, age and education is a sign of prosperity and great social status. This tradition is what my parent’s have been taught ever since they were young in the 1960s-1980s, and this is also exactly what my parent’s still emphasize into what they continue to teach me today. To my parent’s money is not power, the way some people would look at it, but knowledge is power, because it is the source of money. “ You have to have the person that knows how to create the money that we use, before you can have the money” is what my sword master Sensei Kurasaki would always tell me when he compares knowledge with power. This traditional belief is one of the many reasons why I have decided to attend the University of Texas Dallas to learn and develop my skills so that I may succeed in life. One of my parent’s my prized policy within our household has always been to do your best and work hard toward your goals. My parent’s has enforced this policy through my sister ever since she was in school up until she graduated from the very same university that I now attend The University of Texas Dallas. My parent’s believe that through hard work and determination or just ambition a person can achieve anything. I now am faced with the same policy as my sister had, and will try my best to graduate from college with my planed major of ATEC degree in my hand.

The characteristics that I have today deep inside of me is all because of the many special people in my life and the many places that I have seen or visited. My character, surroundings, and my parent’s traditional values are all of the ingredients used to compose me into what I am today and I am very thankful to them for what they have done for me. A person is made up of the many experiences that he or she has experienced throughout their lives, whether it is good or bad is how they choose to look at it and accept it. My personal motto is to just “smile” and do my best.

    Paragraph 3 revised

The Academic disconnects that I have experienced with my parents generation include the type of schools that I attended, the teachers that I had, and the country that I studied in. Unlike the strict and expensive schools that my parents attended when they entered in to middle school, I went to to an American school to learn the basic knowledge that I and so many others know now. In Vietnam once a student graduates from basic school they may choose to go to the higher level school but will have to pay a tuition for all the classes taken just like the universities and colleges here in America to study and learn within them. While I studied under kind and helpful teachers, who would help me on problems and kindly correct my mistakes, the teachers that my parents had would punish them and beat them with a stick if they made amistake or answered wrongly in class debates and questions, because in Vietnam it was direspectful to not be able to do one's class work or study for class. although i did study in vietnam from when I was five to seven years old, most of my education was recieved in americ so I do not feel very connected with my parent's generation of studying and learning in the strict education environment of Vietnam. However, while I was studying in Vietnam, I did enjoy it becuase I had great friends like my best friend Huang who would support me and help me through class and entertain me when I was down. another disconnection that I have to my parent's generation was that at their time in Vietnam there was a civil war occuring between the North and south and all young men were required to join the military and skip their higher eduaction, unlike in America where there was a draft system for recruiting men into the army at a certain age unless they had an excuse or could go to college.

    1/22/06

    Dear Producer,
My name is Johnny Tran and I have been a fan of your TV comedy series Gilligan’s Island from when it first aired to when the show stopped airing, I am writing to you in hopes that you may revise and modernize the show for the fall 2006 season line-up of comedy shows that will be aired for your channel. First, I believe that airing a revised and modernized version of Gilligan’s Island will bring back the laughter and smiles on the faces of today’s baby boomers reminiscent of the old days. As you are aware you yourself are a baby boomer, did you not enjoy the fun filled days when you worked with the cast and crew of Gilligan’s Island? I believe that both you and many others enjoyed the fun filled antics and guests appearances that arrived on the island; for a comical show is probably one of the best and enjoyable things that a proud producer of your stature can give to his audience while enjoying directing the show yourself. Secondly, as we all know, in today’s world of TV “Reality TV” is becoming more popular with most of the age groups, shows like Survivor and Fear Factor are some of the shows that portray the sense of reality and are often watched by many to give them the feeling of adventure and excitement in their life since some people cannot go have the exciting experiences themselves. Now, if you were to mix the adventure of reality TV and the comical and funny antics of today’s comedians and actors on a deserted island, I believe you would have a work of comical art at hand. To me Survivor is just a more serious version of Gilligan’s Island without the non-stop fun and all the seriousness of life on a deserted place. Finally, I believe that everybody enjoys a good laugh once in a while. When you’re feeling down, what do your friends do for you? Do they not try to make you smile or laugh? How do you get smiles and laughter in a bad situation? Do you go see a doctor or a comedian? Don’t you go see a comedian? Where can you quickly get a comedian, on TV of course? Throughout the ages laughter has always been with us no matter the situation, on the battlefield or at home laughter is there to relieve us of our stress and tensions inside. As a good friend of mine once said “laughter is the medicine for everything even if it is only temporary”. That is why I believe that a revised version of the TV sitcom Gilligan’s Island can be a great addition to your 2006 fall season, for it will bring in higher ratings from old fans, greater laughter, and relief to the stresses of everyday life for those people who work on stressful jobs watching TV. Thank you for taking your time to read my letter, I hope that you would consider my letter and opnion and bring back Gilligan’s Island.

    Best Wishes to Your Shows,
